Cheyenne, Wy- Bryce Meredith and Archie Colgan have done it! They both won individual titles at the Big 12 Championships. Meredith led the Pokes this evening and helped lead them to a solid fourth place finish as a team. The Cowboys racked up a total of 82.5 points. This was the highest finish for the Pokes since joining the Big 12.
Meredith faced Oklahoma State's Dean Heil for the second straight year. Heil got a takedown in the opening period, but Meredith answered back soon after. He scored a reversal to take the lead at 3-2 heading into the second period. After two periods they were all tied up at three. Meredith dominated Heil in the last two minutes with a takedown and an escape point. He held on for the 6-5 decision to take the title. This was his second win over Heil who is an two time NCAA Champion. Not only that, Meredith was named Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Archie Colgan wrestled in his first Big 12 title match this evening. He met up with Clayton Ream of North Dakota State. Colgan got the W with a 4-3 decision. He scored two takedowns and took a 2-1 lead in the third period. He had two more escapes to give him enough to win the title.
Up next we wait and see who the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will select for the remaining 47 at large qualifiers. The 2018 NCAA Championships are set for March 15th in Cleveland.
