DOJ rolls back protections for transgender students

CHEYENNE, Wy.(KGWN)- The Trump Administration has removed federal protections for transgender students.

In a joint action today (February 22), the Departments of Justice and Education rescinded instructions that schools nationwide respect the gender identities of transgender students.

Under the previous guidance put in place by the Obama Administration, schools receiving federal funds had to allow all transgender students access to bathrooms and other facilities that matched their gender identities. Today the White House withdrew that policy in new guidance to public schools.

In a statement, the White House said President Trump believes the policy regarding transgender bathrooms should be decided at the state level.

The letter also says despite the removal of the guidance, students still are protected from harassment and discrimination.
