Gillette, Wyo - A truck fire crash on October 8th east of Gillette, Wyoming resulted in one fatality and Wyoming State Highway 51 being closed for an extended period.

The crash occurred on WY 51 on October 8th at approximately 12:45 p.m. near mile post 136 seven miles east of Gillette.

A 1990 Peterbilt commercial truck towing a trailer driven by Moorcroft resident Steven Jewett, 63, was traveling east on WY 51 when it traveled into the westbound lane and struck a guardrail in the north ditch. The truck and trailer continued east in the westbound lane of travel until the guardrail ended at which point the vehicle entered the north ditch. Once in the north ditch, the truck and trailer struck two separate propane tanks and a storage shed. The truck and one of the propane tanks caught fire with Jewett remaining in the truck during the fire.

Investigating Troopers believe Jewett experienced a medical condition before the crash and was deceased before the truck crashed and caught fire.

Highway 51 was closed for approximately four hours due to this crash.

If a medical condition did cause the death of Jewett before the crash, then this event will not be counted as a fatal crash per federal guidelines in regards to fatal crash investigations and reporting.
