School Bus camera shows near accident and leads to citation

CHEYENNE, Wy.(KGWN)- Cheyenne Police are using footage from bus cameras to spread a message and catch violators.

On Wednesday the department released a video from Laramie County School District # 1 depicting an almost tragic event. In the video you see a car speed pass a bus and almost hit several young students that look to be crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.

Cheyenne Police used the video to identify and later locate the driver. The person was cited for careless driving and using a cell phone while driving. The videos provided the evidence to substantiate the issuance of the citations.

Laramie County School District #1 school buses are equipped with multiple cameras that capture dozens of violations daily, including vehicles passing stopped school buses with their red flashing lights activated.

Cheyenne Police say like this incident, officers do follow up on these complaints and issue $400 citations when they are able to identify the driver in the videos.

The Department shared the video in hopes of sending a message to never drive distracted and be aware when driving in school zones.
