LCCC president receives Shirley B. Gordon Award

Dr. Joe Schaffer

Cheyenne, Wyo. - Dr. Joe Schaffer, president of Laramie County Community College, was one of only 19 college presidents in the nation to receive the 2017 Shirley B. Gordon Awards of Distinction at PTK Catalyst 2017, Phi Theta Kappa's annual convention in Nashville, Tennessee, this month.

Phi Theta Kappa is the world’s largest honor society for two-year college students.

Honorees are selected for this award based on outstanding efforts given toward promoting the goals of Phi Theta Kappa. The award is named for the late Dr. Shirley B. Gordon, the organization’s longest-serving board of directors chair. Gordon was named Phi Theta Kappa's Most Distinguished College President in 1984.

Nominees should have served as president at least five years at the current institution and demonstrated a strong level of support for Phi Theta Kappa during their tenure.

Other honors for LCCC at the convention include:
• Distinguished Chapter Advisor Award: Jeff Shmidl
• Distinguished Chapter Member Award: Liz Ivie
• Five-star rating for the chapter
• Within the 32 chapters in the region, LCCC received 4th place for Overall Distinguished Chapter Award
