Cheyenne, WY (KGWN) - Firearms retailers nationwide saw a surge of business in 2012 and 2013 in reaction to possible federal gun legislation and the Sandy Hook tragedy.
AR-15 and AK-47 sales have now taken a dip nationally.
Cheyenne sales of what many refer to as "assault weapons" saw a huge rise in late 2012 and early 2013, but have since fallen off.
"Here in Cheyenne the sales for AR-15 and AK-47's fell off after June of last year so the panic buying we went through from December after Sandy Hook right up until the end of May," said Ryan Allen, co-owner of Frontier Arms.
Much of that panic buying, Allen attributes to legislation that would have made it tougher to purchase those firearms.
"A lot of people felt that there was some relief there that they didn't have to worry about any kind of other legislation coming down to ban like in the 90's against AR-15's and AK-47's," Allen said.
At Guns & Gear, owner Frank Gerstenkorn says sales of AR-15's and AK-47's or as he refers to them "tactical firearms", really dipped after the panic buying ceased.
"I mean it dries up pretty bad and it did dry up for us for a while and sales were down," Gerstenkorn said.
As a result, retailers saw more favorable pricing.
"Pricing from the manufacturers has changed a little bit and as a result the distributors give me a better deal on the guns that we're buying," said Gerstenkorn.
But recently there's been a rise in sales of "tactical firearms".
"Now we're seeing a renewed interest and it's kind of hard to figure out just why there's a renewed interest," Gerstenkorn said.
One possible reason for the recent upturn is tax return season.
"Tax return time is always a good time for us. I've had people walk in and sign their tax return check and say fill it up Uncle Frank and we fill them up," said Gerstenkorn.
Gerstenkorn said he expects there to be a slow rise, but it hinges on the strength of our economy.
"The economy has an awful lot to do with tactical firearm sales, all firearm sales to tell you the truth," Gerstenkorn said.
