Cheyenne, WY (KGWN) - You might have seen it before on the interent...people who wear rubber bubbles over the top half of their bodies running as fast as they can and slamming into another bubble covered friend. They both bounce backwards, ending up rolling around on their backs trying to get up. Well...this phenomena has come to Cheyenne.
Jim Wollenburg saw bubble soccer making the rounds on late night television last year and got interested. So, he made a few calls and found a retailer in Canada. Now, the Cheyenne Parks and Recreation division has their own bubble soccer set, complete with an inflatable playing field outline and inflatable bubbles.
Wollenburg helped put on the first ever bubble soccer tournament today. There were 7 teams registered for the 3 on 3 event. Games consist of two 8 minute halves with a four minute halftime period. It's basically the same rules as soccer, expect you play with a giant rubber bubble over you.
Watching the games is an absolute riot, as people generally try to hit other players as hard as they can as opposed to really trying to score goals, but Wollenburg says that the bubble makes it safe, but he would recommend knee pads. He was very pleased with the interest in the tournament and hopes that it continues to grow. His plan is to hopefully set up a league if there is enough interest.
The bubble soccer set is available for rent if you're interested. It can be played outside in a park, or set up in an indoor arena. For more information on bubble soccer you can visit the Cheyenne Parks and Rec website.
