CHEYENNE, Wyo - The Laramie County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an incident that led to the death of an inmate at the Laramie County Jail.

According to a press release, Hunter Lee Johnson, 19, was arrested by officers with the Cheyenne Police Department at 3 am on December 19. Johnson was involved in a disturbance at the Walmart on Dell Range that ended with his arrest for Interference with peace officer, breach of peace, and minor under influence of alcohol.

Three days later, on December 22, Johnson made an appearance in Circuit Court and then returned to the Laramie County jail. Shortly afterwards, he found unresponsive in his cell. Although a more detailed explanation has not been given, his family has been in contact with us and says Johnson was found hanging in his cell.

Jail employees performed CPR on Johnson and then turned him over to the care of doctors at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

His obituary says services will be held Thursday at 10:20am at Calvary chapel and guests are asked to wear western attire in honor of Hunter.

We’ve reached out to the Laramie County Sheriff’s Department to find out what their procedures are when it comes to the care and supervision of inmates and will update once we learn more.
