Medicine Bow closes Pole Mountain roads

Laramie, WY (AP) - Wet conditions and illegal off-roading are causing Medicine Bow National Forest officials to temporarily close most roads in the section of forest between Cheyenne and Laramie.

The closures announced Tuesday for the Pole Mountain area will take effect later this week. The closures won't affect Forest Service permit holders or access to private land. The Tie City and Happy Jack recreation areas will remain open.

Hiking, bicycling, skiing, rock climbing and other non-motorized activities still will be allowed.

District Ranger Frank Romero says the closures come as a last resort following years of damage caused by vehicles during springtime.

He says the closures will be lifted as the roads begin to dry out, which could take anywhere from a couple weeks to more than a month.
