Preliminary Hearing for Albany County Man Accused of Child Abuse

Laramie, WY (KGWN) - Alexander Smith, one of the defendants accused of keeping a seven-year-old boy locked in a cage made an appearance in court on Thursday. Smith is charged with child abuse and felonious restraint. His girlfriend, Jena Harman is charged with the same crimes for allegedly neglecting her son and requiring him to go in a cage for days at a time.

On July 24th, Albany County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested Harman and Smith after a tip from the night before. The boy was taken into protective custody. Court documents show that neither Harman nor Smith understood why the cage was harmful to Harman's son. They referred to it as his "play pen."

Harman waived her preliminary hearing. Smith's case was bound over to district court by a judge. Smith's defense attorney Thomas Fleener said he believes the court has a ways to go convicting his client of a crime. "I think when we lay all the evidence out in front of a jury that understands Wyoming laws, he will be exonerated on all counts," said Fleener.
