Sentencing Begins in Castellanos Murder Trial

The sentence hearing began Monday morning in the Nathaniel Castellanos murder case. After being found guilty on all three counts, Castellanos now faces three possible fates: life sentence with parole, or life sentence with out parole the death penalty.

Both counsels made their pleas to the jury in their opening statements.The prosecutors asked for the death penalty, while the defense asked for mercy.

The prosecutors were the first to call witnesses to the stand, building their case on prior violent acts in Castellanos past. Anthony Shants is a security guard that Castellanos assaulted after having his vehicle towed. Then Chris Gutierrez took the stand, testifying that after being in a car accident with Castellanos, that Castellanos approached the vehicle, opening the driver’s door and punched him several times to the face.

In the afternoon session, Castellanos ex took the stand. She testified that after telling Nathaniel she was pregnant, he hit her in the back of the head with an iron, and proceeded to get on top of her and choke her. Finally, a former inmate testified to being attacked by Castellanos and another inmate. During the assault, he suffered a fractured nose, and face swelling.
