The Nathaniel Castellanos sentencing hearing continued Tuesday morning with the defense taking their turn at calling witnesses to the stand. It was an emotional morning at the court house, as Aminta Bertiz, Castellanos’ mother took the stand. She gave a testimony of Nathaniel’s hard upbringing, and how she noticed a change in him after his divorce.
During her time on the stand, she shared several personal stories of Castellanos growing up, during which time, she, many members of the jury, and even Castellanos came to tears. The prosecutors pointed out that many of the joys Aminta said Nathaniel got to enjoy in his life during her stories (such as having a wife and children) Megan McIntosh and Corey Walker will never have.
In the afternoon session, the defense continued to build their case for mercy as several more of Castellanos’ family took the stand. Many of the witnesses testified to Castellanos character as a protective family member. The prosecutors argued that many family members weren't aware of his violent record and in some cases, didn't really know Castellanos at all.
