Ft. Collins, CO (CBS) - A 14-year-old boy and his uncle died fishing on a Colorado river on Memorial Day after the child fell in and his uncle tried to save him, CBS Denver reports.

The boy slipped into the Cache la Poudre River as the two were fishing in Poudre Canyon, west of Fort Collins, on Monday. His 38-year-old uncle jumped in after him.

The uncle was rescued two miles downstream. He was taken to a hospital nearby by helicopter but died Monday night.

The teenager was found by kayakers three hours later, eight miles downstream from where he had fallen in.

Neither of their names was released

"At one point both of them were together but the little boy was barely keeping his head above water," said Lupe Ybarra, who was nearby when the accident happened.

Rescuers said they were hampered by the harsh conditions in the river and the steep conditions of the Poudre Canyon.

A third man was injured trying to rescue the uncle. He was reportedly hospitalized in good condition on Tuesday.

Caleb Schwartz and Jake Stone helped to get the uncle out of the water. They said they saw him floating unconscious.

"We ran in the water and luckily right there it was about knee deep and not over our heads," one said.
