Brooklyn, NY (CBS) - The U.S. attorney's office in Brooklyn says Republican Congressman Michael Grimm has been taken into custody to face federal charges.
The New York City congressman was being booked on Monday at the New York FBI office in lower Manhattan. He was expected to be arraigned later.
Prosecutors didn't immediately specify the exact charges he faces, although he has been under investigation for two years for alleged campaign finance violations. Investigators have been examining his fundraising in a 2010 race and his involvement in a restaurant that was once fined for not carrying workers' compensation insurance.
Grimm's lawyer said last week that he expected prosecutors to file charges. He said his client would be vindicated.
"Congressman Grimm asserts his innocence of any wrongdoing," Grimm's attorney, William McGinley said in a statement last week. "When the dust settles, he will be vindicated. Until then, he will continue to serve his constituents with the same dedication and tenacity that has characterized his lifetime of public service as a Member of Congress, Marine Corps combat veteran, and decorated FBI Special Agent."
