Western Nebraska Veterans’ Home Receives Fifth Deficiency Free Survey

Lincoln, NE - The Western Nebraska Veterans’ Home in Scottsbluff, Nebraska recently received its fifth deficiency-free survey from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The facility, part of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, had no deficiencies in the areas of life safety, resident care, environment, staff training and development, dietary-food service, banking and billing services for veterans, recreation/activities, medical staff credentialing, social work, and all areas related to quality assurance and care.

The VA surveyors were comprised of an interdisciplinary team of eight personnel from various parts of the country, including Registered Nurses, a Dietician, and a Life Safety Code expert.
Some of the team’s comments included: “The members and families are very happy with the care they receive. The facility is very well maintained, and the employees were very helpful and dedicated to providing quality care to the members.”

“This deficiency-free survey is testament to the very dedicated staff that truly care about the people they serve,” according to Lonnie Starke, the facility’s administrator. “We are also fortunate to have overwhelming support from our service organizations, community, and numerous volunteers. It’s a team effort from everyone connected with Western Nebraska Veterans’ Home that has allowed us to maintain consistently high standards of care.”

Starke said he is proud of the WNVH staff and is honored to be part of the Nebraska DHHS Division of Veterans’ Homes, which focuses on caring for members and doing the right thing…part of the DHHS mission to “help people live better lives.”

“A deficiency-free survey is typically an unusual occurrence,” said John Hilgert, director of the Division of Veterans’ Homes in the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. “To have five perfect surveys truly says great things about the committed staff members who live the mission of serving America’s heroes. We are all very proud of their accomplishments, and their team effort sets an example for us all.”

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services—Division of Veterans’ Homes includes facilities in Bellevue, Norfolk, Grand Island, and Scottsbluff.
