Cheyenne, WY (KGWN) - Upgrades to Cheyenne's Municipal Pool began today as ground was broken on the city's new aquatic center.
Mayor Rick Kaysen, Parks & Rec officials, pool employees and City Council members shoveled the first dirt signifying the beginning of a one year Municipal Pool remodeling project.
The $6.6 million project will be paid for by sixth penny sales tax money and proceeds the city gained from the sale of land to Menards Home Store.
With that price will come a host of new amenities for the community to enjoy.
"We're going to put a double slide tower in that'll run outside of the building and curl around and come back in. I think that'll be the biggest thing that people will see," said Rick Parish, Director of Cheyenne Parks & Rec Department.
There will also be zero depth entry to pools, similar to a beach, as well as a lazy river and three lap swimming lanes.
Previously, the pool could only put on one or two programs at one time. At the new aquatic center there could be three to five things going on simultaneously.
"They can come in and do a water exercise class in the warm-water area, a special therapeutic type class. We can still have kids playing in the lazy river in the play area with the shallow depth entry, lap swimming can be going on in the other pool," Parish said.
The aquatic center will also be more family friendly.
"We're also remodeling all of the bathrooms and adding family bathrooms," said Parish.
The Municipal Pool will be closed all summer, but Johnson Pool and Sloan's Lake will still be available and Laramie County School District One will be providing availability to the pools at East and Central High School to make up for the closure.
Parish says they are targeting full completion of the project for May of 2015.
