Cheyenne, Wyo. (KGWN) (Release) Cheyenne Firefighters were challenged in below zero temperatures Tuesday afternoon as they fought a detached garage fire in the 800 block of Cleveland Avenue. The garage was located behind a single-family residence.
The owner of the garage was able to escape when the fire broke out. No injuries were reported.
Damage to the two-car garage and contents was estimated at $175,000. The garage is a total loss. Cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“Once firefighters arrived on scene they encountered an air temperature of minus three degrees and a wind chill of minus 12 degrees,” said Jon Narva, Operations Division Chief for Cheyenne Fire & Rescue. “The frigid weather made fighting this fire a challenge for firefighters and equipment.”
Firefighters were on scene of the fire until 7:55 p.m.
Twenty-six fire firefighters responded to the fire. Because of the impact the extreme cold temperatures had on firefighters and equipment, crews were rotated every 30 minutes and waited to be rotated back in to fight the fire from a warming bus.
Cheyenne Fire & Rescue responded to 11 other emergency calls during the time they were on scene of the garage fire.
