Cheyenne, WY (KGWN) - This morning's nasty weather left many roadways out of Cheyenne closed.
NewsChannel 5's Kyle Markley tells us how much traveling on closed roads could end up costing you.
Icy roads and near white out conditions were the cause of treacherous driving conditions Tuesday and the closure of major roadways leading out of Cheyenne.
"Do not go around the road closure gates. It's very dangerous, number one and it's illegal number two and you could be cited," said Sgt. Steve Townsend, Wyoming Highway Patrol.
We saw many cars stopped, waiting for gates to open on Interstate 25 and US 85, north of Cheyenne.
But that didn't stop some drivers from going around the gates and driving into hazardous conditions.
Highway Patrol reported several cars caught testing their luck by driving around the gates.
"The bond amount for that citation is $420. However, if you went to court the fine could be as high as $750," Townsend said.
Sometimes reasons for the gates being down aren't as obvious as when there is severe weather, but Highway Patrol says it's important that drivers obey the closures for their own safety and the safety of others.
"It could be road related or a bridge or the road is washed out. Could be weather related. Zero visibility, icy road conditions. Could be a crash that has the road blocked. You never know," said Townsend.
