Jury Duty Phone Scam Hits Cheyenne

Cheyenne, WY (KGWN) - The Laramie County Sheriff's Department has received reports of a male who's claiming to be Lt. Gore with the Laramie County Sheriff's Department.

He's calling people and telling them a warrant has been issued for their arrest for failing to appear for jury duty.

The caller then says the person can either turn themselves over to local law enforcement or pay a warrant fine by going to Walgreen's on Dell Range and purchasing a "Green Dot Money Pak."

Captain Linda Gesell with the Laramie County Sheriff's Department says that's not standard protocol.

"They may be served a civil subpoena through the district court for failing to appear," said Gesell. "That would be served by someone in uniform through our Civil Division and there's rarely a fine attached to that."

Gesell says if you receive a call like this to try to get as much information from the caller as you can and then turn that information over to your local law enforcement agency.
