North Platte River to be flushed this week

Casper, WY (AP) - The North Platte River will be running high this week as part of an effort to improve fish habitat.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department cautions sportsmen to be aware of high water flows for 10 days beginning Monday.

The department requested the flushing flow in order to maintain fish spawning habitats and to increase production of invertebrates that fish depend on for food.

In recent years, flows were increased for five days each spring and occasionally repeated for another five days in the fall. However, the fall flush has caused loss of vegetative cover and invertebrates in upstream reaches of the river.

Officials hope a single 10-day flush in the spring will be better able to maintain high quality spawning habitat for trout.
