Towgwotee Pass, WY (WYDOT) - High winds and snow have forced the closure of U.S. 26/287 over Togwotee Pass this morning due to a "significant storm," according to Wyoming Department of Transportation maintenance foreman Paul Boedeker of Dubois.
"The highway will likely be closed for quite a while," Boedeker said. "We have high winds, deep snow, and we are currently unable to reach the road-closed gate on the west side of Togwotee Pass. It's very nasty out there and not safe on the mountain."
According to the National Weather Service, the highway between Moose and Moran Junction (north of Jackson has been closed to winter conditions. "The rapid snow melt caused by the mild temperatures over the last few days created significant amounts of standing water in the valleys," the NWS Facebook post states. "This water has been frozen over by the cold front that moved in overnights. This layer of ice is now being covered by heavy snow and blowing snow. Needless to say, this is not a great day to be traveling in the west (side of Wyoming)."
