Jackson, WY (AP) - Organizers say an auction of antlers that benefits a national elk refuge and local Boy Scouts netted more than $230,000, nearly three times average.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide reported Tuesday that the weekend auction, the 47th annual sale, also saw 13,698 pounds of elk antlers sold for an average $16.50 a pound. The average total is 8,197 pounds, and the average price per pound is $10.52.

The National Elk Refuge's education and visitor services coordinator Lori Iverson calls the record results a welcome surprise.

The refuge in Jackson gets 75 percent of auction proceeds, and the Jackson District Boy Scouts the rest. Scouts spend thousands of hours collecting and sorting antlers for the auction, which this year drew 127 bidders from 29 states.
