Laramie, Wyo. (Aug. 14, 2014) -- Saying he was pleased with the progress his team has been making this week, Wyoming head football coach Craig Bohl met with the media following an intense practice on Thursday morning that saw the Cowboys conclude the day with a series of goal-line situations. During that goal-line period, the No. 1 offense was pitted against the No. 1 defense.
“We finished with a spirited goal-line period today, and it was good to see both our offense and defense compete out there,” said Bohl. “The offense scored on the final series after the defense had a couple good stops on earlier series.
“I liked the way our running backs ran hard today. Both D.J. (May) and Shaun (Wick) ran well.
“I saw some good coverage by our secondary, particularly Blair Burns. I think he is really playing with a lot of confidence. Cornerbacks, maybe more than any other position other than quarterback, have to play with confidence. He’s played in a lot of different defenses during his time here at Wyoming and played for a lot of different position coaches. I think Blair realizes this is his last year, and he wants to have a great year.”
Bohl said it was not only encouraging to see both the offensive and defensive units come up with some big plays in Thursday’s practice, but it was good to see both teams enjoy some success.
“It’s good for all of our players when they experience success,” said Bohl. “It’s good for their confidence and for their morale. We’re on the backside of fall camp now, and it’s a grind. When you see players enjoy some success it’s good for everyone’s spirits.”
The Cowboys will conduct two practices on Friday at 9 a.m. and 4:20 p.m. before they scrimmage for the first time this fall on Saturday at 11 a.m. The scrimmage is closed to the general public and to media. Bohl said the scrimmage would last for about an hour on Saturday. Media will be offered the opportunity to interview players and coaches in the Rochelle Athletics Center War Room after the scrimmage, which will be at about 12:15 p.m.
For the first time since opening fall camp on Monday, Aug. 4 the Cowboys will get a day off on Sunday.
In other player news, one young Cowboy returned to practice on Thursday. Freshman defensive tackle Sidney Malauulu, who had suffered a sprained MCL in his knee earlier in fall camp, returned to the practice field.
Two Cowboys who came to the Wyoming Football program as walkons have been awarded scholarships. Those two are sophomore wide receiver Tanner Simpson from Lander, Wyo., and redshirt freshman fullback Drew Van Maanen from Parker, Colo. Van Maanen joined the Cowboy squad in the fall of 2013 as a true freshman. He was moved to fullback from an H-back/tight end position last spring, and is currently projected as the starter at fullback for the Pokes. Wyoming native Simpson has been a part of the Cowboy Football team since 2012. He redshirted the 2012 season and is now entering his third year as a Cowboy.
Bohl was asked to comment on awarding Simpson and Van Maanen scholarships.
“Anytime you see a young athlete come out and work hard to earn a scholarship I think it not only says a lot about that individual, but it shows other young men that if they work hard there is an opportunity for them to succeed at this level,” said Bohl. “It’s always heart warming as a coach to be able to reward those type of individuals. I was a walkon myself at Nebraska.”
