OREM, Utah (Feb. 25, 2014) University of Wyoming 197-pound junior Shane Woods (Tuttle, Okla./Tuttle HS) was named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday after he helped the Cowboys to their fourth league dual title in the past six seasons. It was the final weekly WWC award of the 2013-14 season.
Woods earned one of his best victories of the season last Friday versus No. 19 North Dakota State on the road. In the 197-pound bout contest, Woods faced off against NDSU’s Tyler Lehmann, rated 27th in the latest NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings.
Woods struck early and often with several takedowns and nearfall points and went on to beat Lehmann in a 14-5 major decision. It was Woods’ 20th win of the season and third major decision, and he remained unbeaten in conference action at 6-0 for the year. He finished the season on a six-match win streak. The bonus-point win for Woods gave the Pokes the boast they needed in a close 17-16 upset of the ranked Bison, which sealed the regular-season dual title for UW. Prior to the loss, Lehmann was unbeaten in WWC action with three pins and had won eight dual bouts.
The conference honor is Woods’ second of the season and second of his career. Along with Woods, redshirt freshman Benjamin Stroh (184 pounds) also received the award twice.
The Cowboys and Bison finished the WWC season with identical 4-1 records but Wyoming held the tiebreaker thanks to Friday’s victory.
The Western Wrestling Conference, which is in its eighth year of competition, is comprised of six schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming. The 2014 WWC Championships/NCAA West Regional will take place March 8 at Utah Valley’s UCCU Center in Orem, Utah.
