LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 13, 2014) – University of Wyoming track and field coach Bryan Berryhill announced Thursday that nine student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent to compete as Cowboys and Cowgirls beginning in the fall of 2014. Wyoming will also sign several student-athletes in the spring after state track meets.
“Our coaching staff is very pleased with this class because we feel it’s well-rounded and hit a lot of the event areas,” Berryhill said. “Our main goal every year is to keep the best kids in the state of Wyoming here and we feel like we did a great job of that with this class. We knew that Wyoming was going to produce a bunch of NCAA Division I track athletes this year, so it was pretty neat that we were able to keep a lot of them in the state. Another thing we focus on during the recruiting process is seeking character as much as talent and all of these kids have high character and come from great family lives.”
UW’s 2014 class is highlighted by the nation’s top 800-meter runner in Ricky Faure and rounded out by student-athletes with extended accomplishments from state championships. The class includes six natives of Wyoming and student-athletes from a total of three states.
“Ricky is just a fierce competitor,” Berryhill said. “At this next level, talent only gets you so far. You have to have that tremendous drive to succeed and he has that. He has a great blend of speed and strength that leads to his versatility in several races on the track and in cross country. It’s not often that you sign an athlete that is ranked first in the nation, so this is a special day for the Wyoming program. It says a lot about where we are at and where we are going that a caliber of athlete like that wants to join us.”
