Rams Win the Bronze Boot... Now Will Coach Glenn Get The Boot?
Laramie - 11/22/2008
Can Wyoming bring back the bronze boot? And will coach Joe Glenn and his staff *get the boot? Those two questions swirling in the wind at War Memorial Stadium. The underlying tension of the 100th Border war surrounding Glenn's job security much like a year ago many people wondered if then Rams coach Sonny Lubick would retain his head coaching position.
With new Rams coach Steve Fairchild and "Keep Joe" signs looking on, the Cowboys struck first in the opening quarter. - 1st Qtr - Wynel Seldon 19 yd TD pass to Chris Sundberg! The Halfback pass works to perfection and catches the Rams napping! (7-0 Wyoming)
- 2nd Qtr - Ward Dobbs interception - returns the ball 24 yards for a TD! One of 15 seniors playing their final game in the Brown and Gold, Dobbs finishes with 11 tackles, 3 for a loss, and the interception return for a score (3 INT's this season). (14-3 Wyoming)
- Dion Morton caught a TD pass from Billy Farris right before halftime to make the score UW 14-10 at intermission. After each team fumbles once in the 3rd quarter, Farris finds Morton again for the bomb over the Cowboy secondary. (CSU takes a 17-14 lead)
- 4th Quarter - Cowboys up 20-17 - Farris's pass to the sideline is grabbed by Wyoming freshman DB Tashaun Gipson - He gets his right foot in bounds for the inteception! But then the play is reviewed and the referees concur that Gipson did not have possession of the ball when his foot was down in bounds. Therefore CSU gets the ball back with no harm done.
- And what do you know - Farris to Dion Morton AGAIN! (24-20 CSU) Farris throws 2 interceptions but 3 TD pass to Morton who also finishes with 160 yards receiving. Rams senior RB Gartrell Johnson III(the Predator) adds a late score and despite Wynel Seldon rushing for over 100 yards, CSU holds on 31-20 to win the 100th Border War in Laramie. Rams also win their sixth game of the season and become bowl-eligible. With UNLV's loss to SDSU, and Utah's victory over BYU for the MWC title, the Rams appear poised for a bid to the New Mexico Bowl. Meanwhile, the Cowboys finish 4-8 and just 1-7 in the MWC, walking off the field frustrated again and uncertain about their coach's future. Joe Glenn said afterwards he will meet with athletic director Tom Burman and UW President Buchanan in the coming days. With more on Glenn's status, here's Macradee Aegerter.
Macradee: In Joe Glenn's 6 years in Wyoming he has received other offers. He brought up a point today about something Wyoming isn't used to. "There were times in our careers here where we did things that maybe you can't measure on a scoreboard," said Glenn after the game. "We have a wonderful coaching staff and a great bunch of guys that have been very loyal and that's something they haven't really had (in Laramie) before. There were times in our careers here that we had opportunities to do something different and really felt like after the Las Vegas Bowl, lets dig in and Wyoming hasn't had that for quite awhile. We did, but we didn't get over the hump. Once again Glenn will meet with AD Tom Burman and President Buchanan in the next few days. Reporting in Laramie, Macradee Aegerter, CBS NewsChannel 5.
