For the first time since 1996 Wyoming football has the coach of the year.
The Mountain West Conference announced Tuesday that third-year head coach Dave Christensen is this year's recipient after leading his Cowboys (picked to finish sixth in conference) to an 8-4 regular-season record and sole possession of third place in the conference.
Christensen is the first Cowboy head coach to win the honor since Wyoming joined the Mountain West, Joe Tiller was the last Wyoming football coach to receive the honor in 1996 when the Cowboys competed in the Western Athletic Conference.
In only his third year at Wyoming, Christensen has led the Cowboys to two bowl games in just three seasons and has an overall record of 18-19, including a 2009 New Mexico Bowl victory over Fresno State.
This season marks the first time since 1998 that Wyoming has won eight or more games.
Christensen will lead his 8-4 Cowboys against the 8-4 Temple Owls to kick off the college football bowl season on December 17th in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl.
