Lights On! Organizes Ball Drop

Posted: Updated:

Plans for a 500 pound ball, set to be dropped on News Years Eve in Cheyenne, are almost complete.

Many celebrate the holiday by going to parties or by watching the ball drop in New York's Time Square.  Some don't even make it to midnight.  But this year, there's good reason to stay up late in Cheyenne.

For the first time ever, a ball dropping event is set to take place in the city's Depot Plaza.

In the meantime, Glen Garret, an architect and member of Lights On!, is busy getting the ball ready. It's eight feet in diameter with a steel frame that weighs nearly 300 pounds. Another 200 pounds will be added when it's strung with lights.

The frame was built by Puma Steel and CH Yarber Construction will use one of its cranes to hoist the ball nearly seven stories high.

The ball will drop at exactly 11:59 PM on News Years Eve.

Lights On! is still looking for Christmas lights. Drop off any LED lights at the Depot lobby, Applebees or Lowes.
