Cheyenne Depot Turns 125

Posted: Updated:

Built in 1886, the Depot in Cheyenne turns 125 this year.

From world class cowboys to famous outlaws, Cheyenne's western heritage is well known. "But what some people don't know is there's a significant railroad history here" explained James Bowers, Executive Director of the Depot Museum.

"This was a place that really didn't exist. The railroad became a magnet for cattle drives... to buy goods or pick up goods" Bowers said.

The Depot was a stop for both passenger and freight trains. It helped Cheyenne earn the title Paris of the West

Passenger service stopped in the 1970's. In the 1990's the Depot was given to the City of Cheyenne.  It's now home to several city offices and used for community events.

Still, for those looking for a piece of western heritage, the Depot Museum offers a rich display of history.
