Police Say Trailer Fire was Possible Murder Suicide

Posted: Updated:

CBS NewsChannel 5 has learned some disturbing details on the trailer fire that killed two February 3rd. Now police are saying it was a possible murder-suicide.

The investigation into a fire that killed a mother and daughter, is coming to an end.

"We found pour patterns within the trailer that indicated that an accelerant was poured inside the trailer and ignited," said Capt. Rich Hillegas of the Laramie County Sheriff's Department. "Also the doors were bolted from the inside.""

34-year-old Erica Delgado and her 11-year-old daughter Miriam Ortiz, were found dead February 3rd, burned to death.

"Those were the main indicators that indicated that this was deliberately set and that it was a homicide suicide," said Hillegas.

Captain Hilleges says Delgado was here illegally from Mexico. "That we know of yes she was not in the country legally. However her daughter was legal. She was born in the United States to our knowledge and understanding."

He says she had just recently lost her job as a housekeeper at Little America, but a motive has still not been found.

This news shocks neighbors who only had high regards for this single mother and her daughter.

"Erica was a very good neighbor, good quiet friendly, just a loving type person," said Edith Klopfer, a neighbor and good friend. "The little girl Miriam was like our granddaughter."

But in those morning hours, all the Klopfer's could do was watch and pray.

"My main concern of course was, were they ok," said Dave Klopfer, Edith's husband. "We couldn't see anything because of the fire, till later we found out, they didn't make it."

Investigators found surveillance video of Delgado purchasing gasoline at a local convenience store. They also recovered text messages with possible overtones of suicide.

The investigation is ongoing. Hillegas says he hopes to have more information to release by next week when more is confirmed.

"A lot of the information we have is still being confirmed, we want to be absolutely sure," said Hillegas. "The consensus is that it was a homicide-suicide."

The Sheriff's Department is asking that if there was anyone in the vicinity of 3008 Terry Road, #17, during the early morning house of February 3rd, and may have seen anything suspicious to contact the Sheriff's Department at (307) 633-4775, or they can contact Crimestoppers/Silent Witness at 638-TIPS where they can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
