Animal Shelter Own Pit Bulls After Attack

Posted: Updated:

CBS NewsChannel 5 learned that on Saturday two pit bulls attacked and killed a Shetland pony owned by Linda Clark.

The dogs, both female, are being held at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter.

The owners have been issued citations and have a court date set.

The owners were also notified that the animal shelter had the pit bulls, but did not come forward and claim them within 48 hours.

By law the dogs have now become property of the animal shelter.

The two dogs were approximately two years old and were spayed.

Director Rick Collord says holding your ground, rather than running is the best strategy if there's a threat of an attack.

"The pony's going to try and get away. The pony didn't have anywhere to go, the pen was small and it didn't have anywhere to go. I just saw the pictures and they're gruesome," Collord said.

According to Collord the dogs have not been euthanized, but a decision on their fate will come Wednesday.
