Law Makers Consider Raising Interstate Speed Limit

Posted: Updated:

One bill being discussed at the 2012 Legislative Session is House Bill 48 which would change the speed limit on Wyoming's interstates from 75 to 80 mph.

Everyday thousands of drivers take to Wyoming's interstates. Most of them are in a hurry to get where they're going.

That's why Representative Thomas Lubnau of Gillette is sponsoring House Bill 48 to increase the speed limit on Wyoming's interstates from 75 to 80 mph. He says it would also promote safety.

In addition to increasing the speed limit, House Bill 48 would make speeding tickets less burdensome for drivers. Tickets issued for driving five or less over the speed limit would be withheld from driving records.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says anytime speed limits are raised, it's a safety concern.  Right now many drivers push the 75 mph speed limit up to 80 mph.  If the bill passes, the agency fears drivers will push the 80 mph speed limit up to 85 or 90 mph.

House Bill is set to he heard by the Transportation Committee on Tuesday.
