Wyoming Department of Education selects Laramie County School District 1 Teacher of the Year

The Wyoming Department of Education recently announced Goins Elementary teacher Laura Drake was selected as Laramie County School District 1's 2013 Teacher of the Year.

Drake, who is a third-grade teacher, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Wyoming and also holds a master's degree from Walden University. She has been an educator for 23 years and has taught in LCSD1 since 2000.

In 2009, she received a U.S. Department of Education Star Teacher Award, and in 2012 she became a National Board certified teacher.

Drake said: "I have worked to create a risk-free, safe and caring environment where students not only can learn, but want to learn and belong. While the job description changes daily, I relish its dynamic nature and have always wanted to learn more and grow."

Goins Principal Dr. Joyce Chalstrom said: "The Goins community is so excited!  We can think of no better teacher to represent the exceptional teachers of LCSD1. Laura demonstrates exceptional initiative and creativity, gives beyond the expected, and displays continual, motivating professional passion. And most importantly, Laura truly cares about and loves children."

As a qualified participant for the competition, Drake received $1,000 and is now eligible to be considered for the Wyoming Teacher of the Year program.

The Wyoming Teacher of the Year program recognizes contributions of classroom teachers across the state. Recipients perform as liaisons between the teaching community and the legislature, the Wyoming Department of Education, districts and communities. They are also involved in teacher forums and participate in workshops and conferences around the state.
