Man Hit by Driver After Fight

Posted: Updated:

A Cheyenne man is behind bars accused of hitting another man with his car, leaving him with a fractured skull, among other serious injuries.

25-year-old Shawn VanWey of Cheyenne (pictured left) is booked into the Laramie County Detention Center on an Aggravated Assault Charge.

According to the Law Enforcement Booking Sheet, he and Tyler Drew, the man hit, were at a party late Saturday night. VanWey told Cheyenne Police he was drinking. He and Drew got into a fight in the middle of Fox Farm to the west of where it intersects with Stinson. After the fight, VanWey got into his vehicle and sped toward Drew, hitting him then leaving the scene.

Witnesses told police he heard VanWey squeal his tires and a woman in the vehicle with him said he told her to "forget the accident had happened."

CBS NewsChannel 5 spoke with VanWey's brother, Marty, who says his brother isn't the only one to blame. "From what we were told by the detective today (Monday), the kid assaulted my brother, sucker punched him and repeatedly beat him," said Marty. "My brother has bleeding in the brain, pretty much broken ribs, and can't walk. He's in a neck brace and in a wheel chair. And they are making him out to be this criminal that he's not."

Marty told us, the fight started over a broken beer bottle. And his brother was trying to "flee for his life" when Tyler Drew ran out in front of his car on Fox Farm. He says he feels for the other family, but wants justice for his brother. "It's just unbelievable that the cops and the DA are making it that my brother is the only one and they are not charging this kid for assault on my brother."

Cheyenne Police caught VanWey soon after on the east side of town and took him to CRMC. After he was released, they arrested him and took him to jail.

At last check, Drew is said to have serious injuries. A neighbor we spoke to says he is in a coma.
