Colder temperatures are here and that means turning on your furnace once again, but before you do experts say that need to have your system checked for safety and efficiency. Many of us have some type of gas fired furnace in our home, and while we generally don't think of them as being dangerous they can be and that's why it is important to have them checked at the start of the cold season.

There are many problems that professionals like Luke Sarne, of Advanced Comfort in Cheyenne see when they inspect a home. Air filters are a primary concern because they are out of sight out of mind, but replacing them is an easy and fairly cheap preventive measure.  In general, gas burning appliances can be very dangerous if they're not maintained and inspected on a regular basis.

Other common, but more serious problems deal with carbon monoxide poisoning, which is known as the "silent killer."  Carbon monoxide is probably the biggest threat that any homeowner faces if there is a gas burning appliance within the home.

So, what are some recommendations for both new and seasoned homeowners to be prepared for the winter season and not end up without heat?   Luke says that keeping up with general maintenance and having your furnace inspected is the best way not to get stuck in the cold.
