Wyoming State Treasurer Dies

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday, Joe Meyer died at the age of 71.

Meyer was elected as State Treasurer in 2006. He was in his second term.

In his career, he held several positions in Wyoming State Government. Before being elected as Treasurer, he served as Attorney General and Secretary of State. He also served as the Assistant Director of the State's Legislative Service Office.

No cause of death has been released, but Meyer was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009. He had brain surgery in January to remove cancer deposits.

His death comes just days after the University of Wyoming announced he would receive a distinguished alumni award at homecoming this week. Meyer graduated from the school with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and a law degree in 1967.

Governor Matt Mead called his service to the State "unmatched."
