UPDATE: 8/9/12 9:50 p.m.
The missing Wyoming girl has been located in Cody, WY. Cody Police say Katelynn Groves was abducted and they are still searching for the man and the vehicle.
The 11-year-old was taken from the Park County Complex, 1501 Stampede Avenue, Monday afternoon at approximately 3:45 p.m.
When Cody Police arrived, they learned Katelynn and two other friends were standing outside in front of the Park County Complex when a male pulled up to the front sidewalk, got out of his vehicle and told the girls he was missing his black lab puppy and asked if they could help him find it. Katelynn said she would help him, and got into the front passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle then left, heading west toward the Paul Sock Recreation Center.
Here's the latest description of the vehicle: it was a white SUV, possibly a suburban, with two seats up front and the back compartment area open with a mattress on the floor. According to reports, the man may have been living out of this vehicle. There is no information at this time on the license plate. The vehicle is described as having a black and red backpack tied to a roof rack and package of bottled water strapped or tied to both the top of the vehicle and the backpack.
The suspect is described as a white man, 55-60 years-old, 185-200 lbs, short, strawberry blonde hair or white hair, neatly trimmed strawberry blonde or white mustache or beard. He was wearing a brown shirt, blue jeans, and a tan baseball styled hat.
The Cody Police Department issued an Amber Alert around 6:43 Monday evening. At around 8:15 p.m., the Park County Dispatch Center received a report of an 11-year-old girl walking down Spirit Mountain Road located off the Sound Fork Road just outside Cody. The girl was found to be Katelynn Groves.
Katelynn told police when she walked to the vehicle, the man showed her a "pistol" and told her to get the front seat. He then drove her onto Carter Mountain. When he let her go, she began walking down the road until she was picked up by a group of hunters in the area.
The FBI and the Wyoming DCI are assisting with the investigation. If you see this vehicle or a man fitting the description please call 911, or the Cody police department at 307-527-8700.
