LARAMIE, Wyo.-(Nov. 21, 2012)-The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team closed out the 2012 regular season with a four-set victory (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20) over the New Mexico Lobos (20-12, 7-8 Mountain West) on Wednesday night in Laramie. Wyoming volleyball honored its three seniors Makenzie Bartsch, Camille Coffman and Jodi Purdy prior to the match. The victory advanced the Cowgirls record to 21-11 overall and 8-8 in MW matches. Purdy recorded 11 kills and set the all-time kills record for the Cowgirls with 1,559. She also recorded 10 digs for her 15th double-double of the season and her 61st of her career.
"Our seniors were very motivated tonight," Wyoming head coach Carrie Yerty said. "I am very proud of this group they came in fired up and wanted to win. This group has done such a great job of building this program and it is such an emotional time. It was great to close the season at home like this for our seniors. We have such great fans and we wanted to win for them too."
Purdy led the way with her 61st career double-double. Fellow senior Coffman tied two other Cowgirls for the second most kills with nine. Coffman also recorded two block assists and one dig. Sophomore middle Erin Kirby added nine kills for the Cowgirls while adding 11 total blocks on 10 assisted and one solo. Junior middle blocker Reese Plante recorded nine kills and five block assists in the match. Setter Rachel Keyes recorded 24 assists for her 32nd match of the season with double-figure assists. Fellow setter Whitney Smith added 15 assists for her 27th match with double-figure assists. Junior libero Becky Stewart recorded 15 digs in the match. It was her 28th match with double-figure digs.
"It always helps us when Erin has 11 blocks," Yerty said. "We had great defense tonight. New Mexico also played excellent defense, but we just kept battling and came out with the win."
The first set started off with a solid kill from Purdy and they scored the next six of nine to take a four point lead, 7-3. After a timeout by the Lobos, they closed the gap with a 5-1 run to even the score at eight. Wyoming would earn the next point off a service error by UNM, but the Lobos responded by running of five of six to give them the 13-10 lead. With the score in favor of New Mexico, two straight block assists by Kirby and Purdy pulled the Cowgirls to within one, 15-14. The Lobos quickly regained a three point lead, 18-15. Started by an Kirby kill, the Cowgirls scored three of the next four to tie up the score at 19 all. The two teams traded scores over the next couple of points until Wyoming earned set point, 24-22. New Mexico would hold off one set point but a kill from Purdy gave them the first set 25-23.
The momentum shifted over to the Lobos to begin the second set as a kill, service ace and two Wyoming hitting errors gave them a 4-0 lead. Out of a Cowgirl timeout, a kill from Plante ended the run, but the Lobos scored six of the next nine to extend the lead to six, 10-4. They would continue to maintain a five to six point advantage until Wyoming closed the gap to four, 13-9. The Cowgirls would keep it around a four point margin until an 8-4 run by the Lobos gave them set point, 24-16. Wyoming would hold off three of those until a kill by Chantale Riddle gave UNM a 25-19 win in the set.
Set three started off similar to the one before with the Lobos taking a 4-1 advantage. A 5-1 run by the Cowgirls started by an Kirby kill put the Cowgirls ahead by one, 6-5. UNM tied it up on the next serve, which was answered with eight of the next 11 to extend the lead to four, 13-9. A service error by Wyoming gave New Mexico their next point, which was answered with the Cowgirls holding them to two points over the next 12 giving UW an eight point advantage, 20-12. The Lobos tried to battle back making a small run to close the gap to six, 23-17. The Cowgirls finally closed it out to take the set 25-18 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
After a kill by Plante kill started off the fourth set, four straight kills by Riddle gave the Lobos the 4-1 lead. An attack error by UNM ended the run and then a kill by Kirby and a block assist brought Wyoming to within one, 5-4. New Mexico would score the next point and then build their to four, 14-10. On the next serve, senior Purdy would record her 11th kill of the night to overtake the all-time leader in kills with 1,559. That would start a 5-1 run to even up the score at 15 all. A kill from UNM's Riddle stopped the scoring run but then four straight points by the Cowgirls put them ahead by three 19-16. Three straight kills by UNM evened it up at 19, but the Cowgirls responded by scoring the final six of seven to win the set, 25-20, and the match 3-1.
The match closes the Cowgirls 2012 regular season.
