On January 3, kettlebell trainer Lorna Kleidman issues a response to a recent article published by U.S. News on the benefits of aerobic training vs. resistance training.
With the holidays ending and New Year’s resolutions underway, many people are trying to find the best ways to burn off the extra pounds they packed on while indulging in snacks and drinks throughout the holiday season. A recent article from U.S. News cited a study that found aerobic exercises are the best way to burn fat and lose weight.
“Previous studies have shown that resistance training has many benefits, including improving blood sugar control… but the effects of it on fat reduction have not been conclusive,” the article stated.
According to study author Leslie Willis, clinical research coordinator at Duke University Medical Center, people that are short on time and want to lose weight quickly should focus on aerobics. In the study that she conducted recently, she “assigned 234 middle-aged men and women, all overweight or obese, to one of three groups for the eight-month study.” One group focused on aerobics, one on resistance training and the third combined the two.
The study found that “those who did aerobic exercise or the combination reduced total body mass and fat mass more than those in the resistance group.”
After reading about the research, fitness expert Lorna Kleidman stated that people should not be deterred from incorporating resistance training into a weight-loss program. “Resistance training still offers amany benefits and, with the proper resistance regimen, people can expect weight loss results,” Kleidman said. “For the most part, people should focus on staying healthy, not just losing weight.”
Kleidman added that kettlebells offer a great way to lose weight while incorporating resistance training into an exercise routine. Kettlebells focus on strength, agility, endurance, and balance, with movements in all planes of motion. . In addition, the fluid movements used with kettlebells help users to work up a sweat that can burn calories quickly.
