Mayor Rick Kaysen held his monthly press conference earlier this morning. There was discussion on many topics including the current budget, fuel tax increases and the proposed student housing at the downtown "hole".
The city budget is in good shape halfway through fiscal year with expenditures below forecast and revenues above forecast.
With respect to the fuel tax increase, the mayor said that projections on what the city would pay out for the increases versus what it would get back are mostly inconclusive due to outside factor, such as gas price fluctuations. Despite this, the mayor supports the increase because he feels that to continue to ignore the existing deterioration of roads is something we can't allow, especially since the increase would help to fund road improvement.
The mayor also addressed the status of LCCC student housing saying essentially that no serious discussions have taken place yet between the city and the college, but he expects them to later this year.
