PRESS RELEASE: Cheyenne Police Department
CHEYENNE,Wyo.—The Cheyenne Police Department collected 108 pounds of unwanted prescription medicines in the first quarter of 2013.
Citizens dropped off unwanted prescription drugs at the Cheyenne Police Department's drug drop box. The amount of prescription drugs dropped off this quarter is more than double the amount dropped off in all of 2012.
The drop box may be used anonymously and is set up to allow prescription drugs to be disposed of in a safe manner.
By disposing of prescription drugs in the drop box, citizens can impede juveniles from easily obtaining unauthorized prescription drugs. Prescription drug overdoses in youth have surpassed the illicit drug overdoses in youth. Most juveniles are obtaining unauthorized prescription drugs from the home and prescription drug abuse is on the rise among youth.
The Cheyenne Police Department maintains the drop box throughout the year and citizens are encouraged to stop by the Cheyenne Police Department Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to drop off their expired or unused prescription drugs.
