Cheyenne, WY - A Tornado Warning was issued for the city of Cheyenne at 3:40 PM after a Landspout Tornado was spotted 10 miles west of Cheyenne.
Thunderstorms began developing around Cheyenne around 3 PM. These storms were generally weak producing a little bit of rain and gusty winds. Even though the storms were weak in terms of producing very little rain and hail, it didn't stop them from producing a Landspout Tornado.
Minor damage was done to some property in the Silver Sage Estates 8 miles west of I-25.
What is the Difference Between Landspout Tornadoes and Normal Tornadoes?
Landspout tornadoes are tornadoes that form from the ground up instead of coming down from the base of a Supercell thunderstorm. Merging boundaries will collide and sometimes cause the air to swirl. If this swirl moves under the updraft of a developing thunderstorm, the rotation can work it's way to the base of the clouds and become a tornado. Although Landspout Tornadoes tend to be weaker than tornadoes produced by Supercells, they have been know to do F3 Damage.
