The Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated the Wyoming Cowboys 37-34 in Lincoln, NE; it was the 2013 season opener for both teams.
The Cowboys put up 602 yards on the offensive side of the ball to 530 for the Huskers.
Brett Smith lead the way for the Pokes, he was 29-43 with 383 yards passing and four TDs and also rushed for 92 yards. Smith was as elusive as ever in this game buying time with his feet until his receivers could get open.
Shaun Wick lead the Cowboys with 12 carries 101 yards on the ground, averaging 8.4 yards per carry. Brandon Miller had 9 carries for 27 yards and 5 receptions for 63 yards and 1 TD.
The Cowboys stayed in the game right until the very last play when Brett Smith scrambled trying to buy time with 11 seconds to play until throwing the ball out of bounds as time expired.
A decision by Dave Christensen to go for an onside kick with 90 seconds to play cost the Cowboys field position but Christensen felt like it was the best decision,
"Getting the ball on the onside kick was I thought a higher probability at the time... than kicking it deep."
The Pokes defense got the 3& Out against the Huskers but 94 yards in 1:07 was too much to overcome for the Cowboys and the team went home 0-1.
