LONDON, October 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
UBM Built Environment Live, the global events-led marketing services and communications company, is delighted to announce the launch of Resource, a three day conference and exhibition focussing on resource security and efficiency through a circular economy.
To be held at London ExCeL, 4th - 6th March, Resource is the first and only free-to-attend event that connects the whole supply chain to collaborate on resource issues and drive a circular economy.
Senior executives from across design, retail, manufacturing, reuse, recycling, resource recovery and extraction will come together to capitalise on the commercial opportunities of recovering and preventing valuable resource from becoming waste and promoting sustainable growth through a closed loop economy.
Showcasing new thinking, 100+ business leaders will feature in the conference streams combined with demonstrations, practical workshops and networking opportunities. Resource will provide the opportunity to hear forward-thinking business solutions and meet partners throughout the supply chain to lay the foundations of a resource-efficient/closed-loop business model.
The European economy is built on decades of resource intensive growth. Research firm McKinsey calculates Europeans use 16 tons per person per year and throw away six tons of that, and half of that waste is buried in the ground as landfill: three tons per person every year.
There are new business opportunities for those who embrace a closed loop model. Those companies who act now to prepare for a new era of consumption in a resource constrained future will protect their profitability and will gain increased market share as consumers make informed choices.
DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) claims that improving resource efficiency is an £18bn per year opportunity. McKinsey predict that by 2030, 30% of the world's demand for resources could be met by improving resource efficiency.
"Business models are changing to recover and prevent valuable resource from becoming waste: now is the right time to strategically engage with major organisations and lay the foundations for closed loop business models," said Resource Event Director, Stephen Gee. "This is about how you minimise waste, who you will work with to close the loop, and how you start to capitalise on these new business opportunities. Ultimately, it's crucial to have the right partners and strategy to capitalise on those opportunities to secure future supply of resource and lock in new profit streams.
"Resource is driven by the founders' firmly-held belief that a resource-constrained world demands new thinking; bringing together the parties who are pioneering a closed loop approach is the vital next step to making closed loop products and models possible."
Resource has already gained industry support from some key organisations within the Circular Economy Including 'The RSA', 'Green Alliance', 'Great Recovery Project', 'Technology Strategy Board', '2 Degrees Network' and 'The Carbon Trust' with more supporters and partners to be announced over the coming weeks.
Sophie Thomas, Co Director of Design at the RSA, commented: "The business case for efficient resource use is stronger than ever with the role of re-design playing a key role. Through the networking and collaboration of different players in material and information flows; from raw materials, to manufacture, branding, and retail, through to re-use, reprocessing and recycling, change can really start to happen. 'Resource' will bring us all together to network, show and learn - a great place to meet new collaborators and kick start a move towards better design and better business."
Mike Pitts, Lead Specialist - Sustainability at the Technology Strategy Board, said: "At a time when leading innovative businesses are trying to understand what the circular economy means for them an event that brings together manufacturers and retailers with designers, materials experts and resource management businesses is very timely indeed."
Resource is being co-located with Ecobuild, the world's largest sustainable building event with over 43,000 visitors. More than 10% of those visiting Ecobuild have a leading role to play within a circular economy and will be joined by a host of visitors from within the extraction, design, manufacturing, retail and resource recovery industries at 'Resource'.
Resource - 4th-6th March
'Waste' is now a valuable resource, both as a valuable supply of materials and an energy source.
Every company has its own approach to resource security, recycling and supply chain sustainability - learning and partnerships are crucial to progress towards a resource efficient/closed loop economy.
We invite you to join us as at London's ExCeL on the 4th-6th of March and become part of the circular economy.
