University of Wyoming head football coach Dave Christensen announced on Tuesday that defensive coordinator Chris Tormey has been relieved of his duties on the Cowboy coaching staff effective immediately. Current defensive line coach Jamar Cain has been named the interim defensive coordinator.
"I felt that we needed to make a change at this time to give our football team and the young men on it the best opportunity to win our remaining four regular-season games," said Christensen. "The last two weeks, our defense has not performed up to the expectations of our coaching staff, our players, nor our fans."
Tormey had been Wyoming's defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, 2012 and ‘13. He will be paid through his contract, which expires in December of 2013.
Cain is currently in his seventh year as a college coach at the NCAA Division I level. He joined the Cowboy staff in the Spring of 2013 after helping lead Cal Poly to a share of the Big Sky Conference title in 2012.
Wyoming has a bye this week. The Cowboys are 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain West Conference. UW has four regular-season games remaining against Fresno State (at home on Nov. 9), at Boise State (on Nov. 16), vs. Hawai'i (at home on Nov. 23) and at Utah State (Nov. 30).
