2017 tax preparation changes to know about

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (KGWN)- Tax season has arrived and there are a couple of changes to look out for this time around. If you are claiming an earned income tax credit or an additional child credit you will not receive a return until after February 27th even if you filed today.

Both tax credits are among the highest for fraud, and the IRS wants to take their time to ensure all returns are legit.

More than half a million people are victims of fraud each year.

However, you can minimize chances for fraud by using a good tax agent. Gabriel Pina with Pina Business Services says, “Make sure your tax preparer is certified, licensed and up to date with their education.”

Free tax preparation is available for those who qualify at Laramie County Community College in CCI Room 144 January 23 through April 12, 2017 on the following dates and times.

· Mon. and Wed., 5-7:30 p.m., Jan. 23 – April 12, 2017
· Sat. 9-11:30 a.m., Jan. 28 – April 8, 2017

Basic income tax preparation services and electronic filing will be available through the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program to qualified Laramie County residents with low- to moderate-incomes, (suggested total family incomes of $54,000-$65,000 or less).

Reminder that due to the Emancipation Day holiday the deadline to file is Tuesday April 18th.
