CHEYENNE, Wyo. (RELEASE) The Cheyenne Police Department is investigating a series of credit card frauds which originated with a skimming device installed on a credit card terminal at a local Loaf 'N Jug convenience store at 5539 Yellowstone. The device used was inside of the store and is referred to as an “Over Lay” skimmer.
A suspect will bring this device in and lay it over an existing terminal, usually attaching it with a strong adhesive. The skimmer then “catches” the victim’s credit card and PIN number when he/she uses it. The stored card information is transmitted via Bluetooth to the suspect’s phone.
A person can give the face of the terminal a little tug before swiping their card; if the face is loose, please alert store staff to inspect the device before using it. Likewise, clerks can check the devices in their store to be sure a skimmer isn’t installed.
The CPD is aware of 22 cases originating in the latter half of February from this particular device, however there may be others in the area. Loaf N Jug has been cooperating with the CPD and other convenience stores have been alerted. No other devices have been found.
If you believe you are a victim of this crime, please have copies of your banking statement with fraudulent activity highlighted and initiate a report at www.cheyennepd.org/report. This case remains under investigation by the Cheyenne Police Department.
