Grilling safety on 4th of July

CHEYENNE, Wyo.- Independence Day is just a few days away and with the beautiful weather ahead, grilling will be a popular activity. But, it can take a dangerous turn.

According to Laramie County Fire District #2, it's important to always keep your eye on the grill or any open flame and make sure your kids know where the grill is and that they enjoy their time away from it.

LCFD also recommends keeping the area around the grill open to avoid tripping hazards near the heat.

Always keep the hood of your grill open when starting the propane because a closed lid could result in an explosion, and if you're using charcoal, let the charcoal burn down before you start grilling your food.
It's also important to keep an eye on what’s happening around you.

"Be aware of your surroundings,” said LCFD firefighter Garret McCullars. “Look up, you know, make sure you're away from the house. Then make sure you've got a clean grill before you start."

Whether you're going to a barbecue or grilling yourself, be sure to have a safe and happy 4th of July.
