Suspect claiming to have hostage at Round-Up Motel Identified

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (KGWN) UPDATE 2/8/16 1:30PM: The suspect has been identified as Andrew Howton. Details on an arrest warrant for Howton from the City of Wheat Ridge can be found in the sidebar or at the bottom of this article.

Reports of shots fired and a deputy injured Friday night at the Round-Up Motel in Cheyenne off of South Greeley Hwy and East Jefferson Rd. The shooter, Andrew Howton, claimed to be holding a female hostage in one of the motel’s rooms. Howton reportedly stated he had explosives. Both of those claims were proven false.

Laramie County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Capt. Linda Gesell confirmed a deputy's hand was grazed by a bullet after Howton fired shots at deputies. The injured deputy is in good condition and just needed a few stitches. SWAT was called to the scene. As was the Crisis Negotiation Team.

The report of shots fired came in at about 9:30PM. This after the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office received an e-mail from Westminster police in Colorado involving a missing person. A ping of Howton's cell phone came from outside the Round-Up Motel.

Once on scene deputies discovered a stolen Nissan Frontier connected to an arrest warrant out of Colorado. Howton had an active warrant out of Colorado for pawn violation. Wheat Ridge police from Colorado were pursing Howton for attempted murder. Details of his arrest warrant can be found in the sidebar or at the bottom of this article.

As of 11PM Howton was making threats that he would set fire to the room.

Tear gas was used shortly after 2AM. Then a robot was deployed.

Negotiations continued for several hours, however Howton refused to come out of the room. Just after 2:30AM the suspect cut off all communications and would not answer phone calls from the negotiator. Tear gas was deployed into the hotel room. The SWAT team was deployed and the male was found deceased in the room from a suspected self-inflicted gun shot wound. The male was alone in the room, no female was in the room and no explosives were found in the room.

Once the scene was rendered safe the investigation was turned over to the department of criminal investigation (DCI).

No gun shots were fired by law enforcement at any time.
