Poder Academy working to get flashing school lights

By  |

CHEYENNE, Wyo.- Poder Academy is a charter school in Cheyenne on Morrie Avenue. There are 177 students and 20 staff members at Poder. The school has school signs posted in the area but no flashing school zone lights. The school is working to raise $6,700 to purchase the lights.

In the school zone the speed limit is 20 mph from 7:30-5:30, but principal Dr. Jayne Smith says many drivers aren't aware.

Dr. Smith says they reached out to the City about installing flashing lights to alert drivers last year. The City did a study and found they do need the lights, she says.

Dr. Smith adds typically the school districts purchase the lights and the City installs and maintains them. Since Poder Academy operates independently they have made attempts to raise the funds, but so far they have only raised about $1,500.

The lights would be installed at the corners of Morrie Ave and 22nd and 23rd.

If you would like to help donate Dr. Smith says you can drop any donations off at Poder Academy at 2201 Morrie Ave, North of Holliday Park. It is tax deductible. For more information you can also call 307-632-2248.
